Thunder has hole in O-line
By Tim Switzer, The Leader-PostMay 4, 2009

Quarterbacks: Check.

Running backs: Check.

Receivers: Check.

Offensive line: We'll see.

While the Regina Thunder is set with several returnees at the first three positions, the offensive line remains a question mark after the Prairie Football Conference team's spring camp.

"We're very solid with the five or six (linemen) we've got, but you can't play the whole year with five or six guys," Thunder head coach Erwin Klempner said after Sunday's scrimmage at Scotty Livingstone Field. "We're going to need to create some depth and if we can do that, we'll be able to do some good things."

During the scrimmage, the Thunder was down to just eight offensive linemen to cycle in and out during the 62 plays. Regina was originally set to have 12 linemen at the weekend camp, but two left after the first day and two were injured. Of those original 12, only five were returnees, three of whom at least have plenty of game experience.

"They played right to the end and made some big plays even against the first-string (defensive) guys," said Klempner.

Gone from last season's team are right guard Ryan Thompson, who completed his five years of junior eligibility, and left tackle Steve Hanson, who has joined the University of Regina Rams. Right tackle Mike Bradshaw, centre Jordy Kyle and left guard Dan Clark were all in camp over the weekend although Clark suffered a minor knee injury and didn't participate Sunday.

Now, like in many areas, Klempner and his coaching staff have to play a bit of a waiting game. Offensive lineman Evan Greff spent the weekend at the Saskatchewan Huskies' spring camp as did receiver Rory Kohlert. Kicker/receiver Jeff Bolen participated in the Alberta Golden Bears' camp over the weekend and is also hoping to attend Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp next month.

On the other side of the ball, lineman Logan Brooks, linebacker Taylor Cameron and defensive back Brett Barber attended Rams camp on the weekend. There is also an outside chance of tackle Steven Arens returning from training with the Armed Forces in Edmonton to play the 2009 PFC season.

"I'm still hopeful that their allegiance to the program (is still there)," said Klempner. "If they choose not to be ... after this camp, I feel very comfortable where we're at."
