WEEK #2 IN REVIEW
WINNIPEG RIFLES 43
EDMONTON HUSKIES 36 AUGUST 29 CANAD INNS STADIUM
The Winnipeg Rifles & Edmonton Huskies served up a back and forth offensive battle in front of 592 fans at Canad Inns Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It went down to the very last play as the Green Gunners hung on to eke out a 43-36 win to even their 2010 record at 1-1.
The Huskies opened up the scoring nearly 7 minutes into the opening frame as Braedon Kopernick returned an Andrew Wiebe punt 55 yards for the games opening major.
The Green Gunners then opened up the Kienan Lafrance Show as he would scamper 66 yards for the game-tying score. That would be the start of a phenomenal afternoon.
Yembeh Moiba would haul in a 27-yard pass from Tyler Nickel to give Winnipeg a 14-7 lead. But the visitors would rebound as Anthony Barrett reeled in a 55-yard Ben Gorniak pass to even the score at 14 apiece nearly 90 seconds later. But the Rifles would quickly build a 2-score edge with touchdowns from Matt Lariviere on a 26-yard catch from Nickel at 13:04, and then only 38 seconds later, following the first of 2 Pedja Hamzic picks, Lafrance would barge in the end zone from a yard out to up the advantage to 28-14. An Andrew Wiebe kickoff single followed and a Mike Goldring 26-yard field goal for the Huskies would hand the Rifles a 29-17 halftime cushion.
The teams would trade touchdowns in a 90-second span early in the third as Sam Schwab scored on a 19-yard pass from Gorniak, and then Lariviere got his 2nd TD thanks to a 42-yard reception. Lariviere would have 3 catches for 106 yards.
Only 94 seconds later, Lafrance would get his 3rd score, a 68-yard dash to give the Gunners a 43-24 lead. Goldring would connect on a 30-yard attempt to make it 43-27 Winnipeg after 3. Lafrance would finish the day with 24 carries for 291 yards, a new single game Rifles record and unofficially, the 8th-best single game mark in PFC history.
A 4th quarter safety, followed by a Zach Wilkie 36-yard touchdown would set up a nail-biting finish as the visitors drove from their 19 to the Winnipeg 17. Anthony Barrett had dropped the game-tying score, leaving the Huskies with 1 second & 1 chance to tie or win it. Pedja Hamzic would get the game saving interception in the end zone to preserve a wild win.
Head Coach Greg Graceffo had this to say after the win, As I said to the players after the game, We should be pleased that we won, but we cannot be content with our overall play today. There are many positives to take from todays game, but we still have a lot of work to do as a team in order to improve.
The Rifles ran for 320 yards on the day and had 483 total yards. Tyler Nickel would complete 8 of 20 for 170 yards, with 3 TDs and 1 INT. The Huskies replied with 438. Gorniak was sensational, completing 25 of 37 for 377 and 3 majors.
The Green Gunners & Huskies wrap up the back-to-back set next Sunday in Edmonton, the only game on the week 3 slate.

Zach Schmidt would make good on 18 & 24-yard placements, with the last one coming with 46 seconds left to seal a 27-13 win that sees the Hilltops go to 2-0 and the champions fall to 0-2.
