WEEK 3 IN REVIEW

WINNIPEG RIFLES         21

EDMONTON HUSKIES  15              SEPTEMBER 5TH CLARKE PARK

The lone contest of the PFC’s 3rd week was the 2nd half of a back-to-back series between the Rifles & the Huskies. Winnipeg took the front end of the set last Sunday afternoon 43-36 and with a win, go into their bye week with a share of the conference lead with the Regina Thunder and Saskatoon Hilltops. The Huskies on the other hand were aiming to put the brakes on an 18-game losing skid.

The Huskies got out of the gate on the game’s opening kickoff as Mike Goldring returned the kick 91 yards to the Winnipeg 11-yard line. The Rifles defense would hold Edmonton to a 2-and-out, forcing Mattias Hencke to kick a 23-yard field goal to give the home side an early 3-0 lead.

Rifles RB Kienan LaFrance, coming off of his monster game last Sunday, would kick-start the Green Gunner offense, scoring his 4th major of 2010 on a 32-yard run to give the Rifles a 7-3 lead on the lone play of the Winnipeg drive. Hencke would add his 2nd field-goal to cut the Winnipeg lead to 7-6 after 15 minutes.

Hencke would connect on 2 more field goals in the 2nd frame to give the home side a 12-7 halftime edge, including a 25-yard boot on the final play of the half, the 4th of 5 on the afternoon.

The lone scoring of the 3rd quarter would come courtesy of a sack of Edmonton quarterback Ben Gorniak. Gorniak would fumble and the ball would find its way to the Huskie 20 where Rifles LB Chris Friesen would pick it up and score to give Winnipeg a 14-12 lead at the end of 3.

Andrew Wiebe would connect on a 31-yard field goal, and then follow up with a kickoff single to boost the Green Gunner lead to 18-12. Wiebe would hit his second field goal of the frame for Winnipeg, then Hencke would make good on his fifth placement of the day for the Huskies. For the 2nd straight week, the game would come down to the wire as the Huskies drove down to the Rifles 15 yard-line, but the defense would put a stop on a 3rd down gamble to nail down the win.

With the win, Winnipeg moves to 2-1 and owns a share of first place in the conference with Regina & Saskatoon who are 2-0. The Huskies fall to 0-3 on the year and their losing streak extends to 19 games.

Both the Rifles & Huskies have week 4 byes.
