PFC Week 9 In Review
2009 PFC AWARDS PRESENTATION
The 2009 PFC Award Winners were named & All-Star Selections
were announced Saturday evening in Saskatoon. Full Story
That's using your head; Hilltops advance in PFC playoffs Steve Grenier led the Saskatoon Hilltops to a playoff win Sunday over Regina. The Saskatoon Hilltops don't have an off-the-helmet bank pass in their playbook. They
turned one into a touchdown Sunday, though. Full Story
REGINA THUNDER (5-3) AT SASKATOON HILLTOPS (7-1)
2PM KICKOFF
Every time the provincial rivals square off, it's undoubtedly a hotly contested matchup & the Thunder & Hilltops served up a pair of close regular season tilts. Regina winning 26-23 at home on August 15th & the Hilltops gaining revenge & the regular season Shrine Bowl prize, emblematic of the season series with an 18-14 win on September 12th.
But the only prize up for grabs in Sunday's 2nd semi-final is a berth in the PFC Championship Game.
The Thunder will have Wyatt Catley at pivot on Sunday as starter Reid Quest tore his MCL in the home loss to the Wildcats. Catley ravaged the Winnipeg defense for 396 yards in his team's 48-20 win last Sunday & has a trio of top 10 receivers in Kolten Solomon, Jay Smith & Camille Lagimodiere. The three combined for nearly 1800 yards & 14 touchdowns on the year. Brennan Kasbrick is the tailback, placing 5th with 324 yards.
Regina owns the 2nd stingiest defense in the PFC, only surrendering 157 points, 23 points more than the Hilltops. That defense is led by Landon Perra who finished 3rd in the Defensive Points standings.
The 7-1 Hilltops just might be at long last putting it all together, which would relieve Head Coach Tom Sargent to no end as he's seen his club struggle mightily at times this season but came together in the nick of time to down Calgary.
Chase Bradshaw will be making his 3rd start of the year, coming off a 267-yard, 5 TD performance against the Colts. Mitch Stevens will be his prime target. Regan Schuler, the conference rushing champion, will attempt to follow up his 191-yard effort. On defense, Corbin Eskelson has come on very strong in the closing weeks of the campaign, edging out teammate Craig Albert in the DPTS category. Albert placed 2nd in the conference with 9.5 sacks. Graig Newman contributed a combined 40 tackles (22 solos & 18 assists) & a pair of interceptions.
Thunder players, coaches, staff and fans,
The time for Sunday's playoff game vs. the Saskatoon Hilltops

A reminder that the game vs the Huskies will be aired on

In Calgary’s 34-24 win over Winnipeg, the 5’9, 165 rookie back ran 28 times for 169 yards, the longest of those was a 37-yard dash. SPECIAL TEAMS- JERIT LAMBERT-WR/PR/KR-EDMONTON WILDCATS
http://vidswap.com/my/embed/badge/user/2102
Jerit Lambert has just about done it all this season. Seeing action primarily as a receiver, he’s also seen action at running back, but is one of the best return men in the conference. In Sunday’s 38-18 road win in Regina, he returned a punt 92 yards for a major score, moving into 4th in the PFC in punt return yards with 217, only 39 behind teammate David Berg. Lambert leads the conference in kickoff return yards with 307, 105 of which came on a touchdown run in the Week 1 win over Calgary.

Quest humble about his abilities
Playing the highest-profile position in football, Reid Quest prefers to keep his profile low. Playing hard for a home playoff game
The Thunder plays host to the Edmonton Wildcats on Sunday @ 1:00 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium. Both teams are 4-2, have secured themselves a playoff spot and are coming off decisive wins over their opponents last week. The Thunder won 52-19 win over the Winnipeg Rifles while the Wildcats beat their cross town rivals the Edmonton Huskies 72-0. This weekend's match up will showcase the league's leading offense against the league's stingiest defense. Edmonton's offence has put up 240 points in 6 games while the Thunder's defense has only allowed 99 points in its 6 games. This is a must win for the Thunder if they want to keep their hopes of a home playoff game alive.

The 3rd year pivot completed 26 of 32 passes for 426 yards & 5 TD strikes in the Queen City club’s 52-19 rout of the Winnipeg Rifles. Quest leads the PFC in passing yards 1,902 & touchdown passes with 17.
DEFENSE-CRAIG ALBERT-DEFENSIVE LINEMAN-SASKATOON HILLTOPS
http://vidswap.com/my/embed/badge/user/1908
Albert adds Week 7 honors to his Week 1 prize as his team’s defense shut down the Calgary offense in the 2nd half of Sunday’s 27-13 home win over the Colts. Albert & company held the Colts to a paltry 3 first downs & 30 yards net offense in the final 30 minutes. The sophomore lineman tallied 19 DPTS on 2 tackles, 4 assists, 3 sacks & a pass knockdown. The Moose Jaw native moves into a 2nd place tie with Regina’s Landon Perra at 79.5 in the PFC Defensive Points Standings.

The 3rd year tailback became the starter at the position this season and on Saturday night against Regina carried 24 times for 174 yards in the Hilltops win. One of those gallops went for a season high 39 yards. The 5’9”, 185, Saskatoon product has a commanding edge in the conference rushing list with 539 yards, a 154 yard lead on Justin McEvoy of the Edmonton Wildcats.
DEFENSE-LANDON PERRA-LB- REGINA THUNDER

In a contest that was a defensive struggle, the 5’11”, 210 lb backer stood out in a crowd of fine individual efforts. Perra recorded 7 Tackles, 2 Assists, a Sack, a Forced Fumble and Recovery and for good measure a 5-yard interception return. When it was all said & done, Perra recorded 27 DPTS in the Thunder’s 18-14 loss to Saskatoon on Saturday night. Perra is 2nd in the PFC Defensive Points Race with 70.5. Perra is a graduate of Regina’s Miller High School and is taking EMT training in order to become a firefighter.
SPECIAL TEAMS-CHRIS BODNAR- P/K- SASKATOON HILLTOPS

For the 2nd time in 2009, the sophomore captures Special Teams honors, hitting all 3 of his field-goal attempts from 19, 33 & 43 yards out in the Hilltops home victory. His punting also played a big role as the conference leader averaged 46.3 yards gross & 41.5 net on 6 punts including a 32 yarder that went for a single late in the 4th quarter. His season average stands at 44.0 gross & 38.7 net.

OFFENSE- KOLTEN SOLOMON, REGINA THUNDER
http://vidswap.com/my/embed/1996
Solomon joined the Thunder this season after spending some time playing university ball and is a large reason why the Thunder are in the midst of a race for 1st place. In Sunday’s 38-7 home field drubbing of the winless Edmonton Huskies, Solomon had 5 catches for an amazing 185 yards and a pair of majors that came 69 seconds apart in the 2nd quarter.
Reid Quest hooked up with Solomon on 37 & 87-yard passes in that time span.
Solomon now has 24 grabs on the season for 411 yards with 3 TD’S. Solomon is a product of Sheldon Williams Collegiate.
DEFENSE- DYLAN KEMP, SASKATOON HILLTOPS
http://vidswap.com/my/embed/1997
The defending PFC Champions have had the injury bug take some big bites out of their lineup in the early going of 2009, but those who’ve filled the gaps have more than stepped up. Dylan Kemp is a prime example. In their 18-16 Sunday win in Winnipeg, Kemp, making his 1st PFC start rattled off 4 Tackles, 4 Assists, a pair of special team stops, a quarterback sack & a pass knockdown for 19 DPTS.
SPECIAL TEAMS- JOHN SZILAGYI, WINNIPEG RIFLES
http://vidswap.com/my/embed/badge/user/1949
The Rifles punter/place-kicker repeated his 3 field-goal performance from the previous week in their home loss to Saskatoon on Sunday. The 3rd year Rifleman went toe-to-toe with arguably the best placekicker in the conference with Chris Bodnar of the Hilltops who went 2 for 3 on the day, missing a 2nd quarter attempt. Szilagyi has also boosted his punting average on the season, now at 40.7 yards/punt.

Calgary Colts will be looking to make it two wins in a row, when they host the Regina Thunder in Prairie Football Conference action at McMahon Stadium on Sunday afternoon. 1:00 is game time. Colts are 1-and-1 on the season, after winning their home-opener last Sunday at McMahon, beating the Edmonton Huskies 36-21. The Thunder, who missed the playoffs a year ago, are off to a quick 2-and-0 start this year, including a 26-23 upset win over the defending league champion Saskatoon Hilltops on Saturday night.
The Thunder are led by quarterback Reid Quest, the offensive player of the week in the PFC. Quest threw for 492 yards in the Thunder's win over the Hilltops. According to Colts G.M. Keith Evans, Quest is an imposing figure in the Regina backfield, with an incredibly quick release. Couple that with a solid receiving corps to work with, and the Regina passing game will be tough for the Colts defense to deal with.
Colts are hopeful to have running back Alan Lichwa back in the lineup this week. Lichwa went down with an ankle injury in the season opener against the Wildcats in Edmonton, though the Colts, led by Cuong Thai Lieu and Jake Harty, still managed to pile up nearly 300 yards along the ground against the Huskies. Lieu had 202 yards on 25 carries, and scored a pair of majors.
This is the second of three straight home games for the Colts. They also play at McMahon next Saturday night (August 29th) when they host the Edmonton Wildcats. After that, they get their bye week, followed by three straight on the road.

OFFENSE- REID QUEST, REGINA THUNDER
http://my.vidswap.com/reidq
Quest had a career best 492 yards passing as his Regina Thunder squad squeezed out a 26-23 win over the PFC champions Saskatoon Hilltops Saturday night under the lights at Mosaic Stadium. In his 2nd campaign as starting QB, Quest completed 36 of 51 passes with 3 TD’s and 2 INT’S and added 27 yards rushing on 4 carries. His 3rd TD toss of the night went to Kolten Solomon with 28 seconds to go and stood up as the winning score.
Quest attends the University of Regina.
DEFENSE- KOREY JOHNSON, EDMONTON HUSKIES
http://vidswap.com/my/embed/badge/user/1922
The Edmonton Huskies have again struggled coming out of the gate, but the outstanding play of the veteran linebacker has been a highlight. Johnson racked up 9 Defensive Tackles and added 4 Assisted Tackles for a sparkling 23.5 DPTS in the team’s 36-21 road loss to the Calgary Colts
SPECIAL TEAMS- CHRIS BODNAR, SASKATOON HILLTOPS
http://my.vidswap.com/cbodner
The 2nd year 5’11, 195 pound Punter/Kicker would help the Hilltops gain an edge in the field position battle averaging 41.7 yards/punt on 10 punts, one of which went for a 4th quarter single in
the Hilltops 26-23 loss in Regina.
Bodnar would go 2 for 2 in the field goal department, connecting on 14 & 28 yard attempts. The Sakatoon product is a perfect 5 for 5 in the field goal department.
Regina Thunder Weekend Wrap up
Aug. 15, 2009
Submitted by Shawn McCall
The Regina Thunder hosted the Saskatoon Hilltops on Saturday night under the lights at Mosaic Stadium. This entertaining game started with the Hilltops jumping out to an early 9-0 lead. The Hilltops then tried a fake punt which was stopped short of a first down. The Thunder proceeded to march down the field to score their first touchdown of the game. Early in the second quarter the Thunder took their first lead of the game with a Jon Probe field goal. The Hilltops came back with a field goal of their own. The Thunder continued to work hard and scored another field goal and a single on a missed field goal as the first half ended 14 - 12 for the Thunder.
The only points of the third quarter were a Saskatoon field goal which gave them the lead going into the last 15 minutes. The Hilltops managed another touchdown before the comeback began. Down 22 -14 Reid Quest hit Jeff Bolen on a short route which turned into a long 52 yard TD run. The two point covert was unsuccessful leaving the home team two points behind 22 - 20. Saskatoon then kicked a single before Regina's final drive was capped off with a third and 3 from about the 7 yard line, a pass from Quest to Solomon. The convert was unsuccessful so the score was 26 -23. Regina's interception with 3 seconds left in the game preserved the win.
Quarterback Reid Quest threw for 492 yards, going 36 for 51 and added 26 yards rushing. The leading rusher for the Thunder was Mark Coons with 12 carries for 47 yards. Jeff Bolen had 13 catches for 205 yards with two touchdowns. Kolten Solomon had 11 catches for 132 yards and 1 touchdown. The defense was lead by Landon Perra with 8 tackles and 1 assist, while Cody Johnstone had the Thunder's only interception.
The Thunder's next game is in Calgary on August 23 at 1:00 p.m. and then returns home for a rematch with the Edmonton Huskies on Sunday, August 30, @ 1:00 at Mosaic Stadium.

PFC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK AUGUST 8 & 9
OFFENSE- JEFF BOLEN, REGINA THUNDER
Sunday's 51-11 Thunder win over the Edmonton Huskies could have been called The Jeff Bolen Show as the versatile WR/K/P single-handedly amassed 29 points, which is the 5th highest single game individual total in PFC history. The mix included 3 TD'S, 2 FG'S, 4 converts as well as a single on a missed field goal. Bolen led all receivers with 9 grabs for 146 yards.

OFFENSE- JEFF BOLEN, REGINA THUNDER

DEFENSE- CRAIG ALBERT, SASKATOON HILLTOPS
Albert was a big part of a Hilltops defense that hurried, harried & limited Winnipeg Rifles Quarterbacks Tyler Nickel & Tyler Johnston to a mere 114 yards passing on the day. Sealing a 44-21 victory over the Rifles by picking up a fumble & rumbling 78 yards for the clinching touchdown. The 6'3" 345 pound Moose Jaw native in his 2nd season with the PFC Champions also had 6 Assisted Tackles and racked up 13 Defensive Points.
SPECIAL TEAMS- DAVID BERG, EDMONTON WILDCATS
The sophomore Wildcat Defensive Back had a frustrating 1st half as punt returns of 50 & 100 yards were nullified by penalties. The third time, as the saying goes, was the charm for the 5'7" product of Harry Ainley High School as Berg ran 64 yards to tie the Saturday night season opener against the Calgary Colts at 14 apiece. Berg would return 6 for 111 yards in the Wildcats 35-21 upset of the Calgary Colts at Clarke Park.

Teams rebuild in turnover year
It's a safe year to rebuild in the Prairie Football Conference. It seems nearly every one of the six teams in the junior football league lost a star or two in the offseason. In fact, of the 11 players who won individual awards last season, nine have either graduated from the junior ranks or moved on to a university team. Another two players from 2008 rosters (Dan Clark of the Regina Thunder and Kevin Wuthrich of the Edmonton Wildcats) cracked CFL practice rosters. Full Story
REGINA THUNDER 51 vs
EDMONTON HUSKIES 11
The 2009 season opener for the Edmonton Huskies turned out to be a continuation of the nightmare that was 2008 as the Regina Thunder rolled to the most decisive win of the PFC's opening week.
Regina's Jeff Bolen would have a busy and productive day, starting with a 44 yard field goal that came from a 4 play, 23 yard drive. A conceded safety gave the Thunder a 5-0 lead after one quarter.
The homestanding Huskies took a 7-5 lead as Tylor Johnson took in a 10 yard TD pass from Kevin Allen, putting the finishing touches on a 3 play, 23 yard drive. But the Thunder regained the lead for good as Reid Quest connected with Bolen on a 23 yard TD strike. Quest then dove into the end zone from a yard out. And then Bolen collected his 2nd major on an 11 yard grab. 26-7 Thunder at halftime.

New Football Officials Needed
The RFOA is looking for new officials for the 2009 season. If your playing career is completed and you want to stay involved in the sport, but your time is too limited to coach, you may want to consider officiating. The RFOA currently provides officials for all levels of amateur football in and around Regina, as well as minor officials for Rider games. Several members past and present have gone on to become CFL officials as well.
Two events are upcoming that will be of interest.
On Tuesday, August 11th at 7 pm, the RFOA will be having a Rules Review and Discussion evening. It provides our returning officials with a refresher and an opportunity to get prepared for the season that starts in August. The meeting will be held in the Board Room of Access Communications at Park & Arcola. Go through the north service entrance to gain access.
A Level 1 Officiating clinic is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 15th. Introduction to the philosophy, mechanics and positions will be provided by certified instructors. A fee will be charged. Further details as to location and time will be provided for this all day session.
The RFOA offers mentoring programs, as well as access to equipment for new officials to help get started with officiating .
Contact details can be found on the RFOA webpage at www.rfoa.ca, or by calling Ron Barss at 775-0946 or emailing ron.barss@sasktel.net
The Regina Thunder finished the 2008 season with 2-5-1 record tied for 4th in the PF. They missed the playoffs but are determined to turn things around this season.

Outlook for 2009
The coaches are very excited about the upcoming season. The average age of the starters will be older then the last couple of years. With this experience they feel that the team should be very competitive and that some of the new players to the team will be making significant contributions by the end of the season.
Amyotte takes leadership role
All of a sudden, Max Amyotte is the oldtimer on the Regina Thunder defensive line. He turns 20 in September. While not exactly old, the fact that Amyotte is in his third season with the Prairie Football Conference team makes him the most-senior member of the Thunder’s defensive front. Full Story

Thunder Fans,
It is hard to believe we are only 1 month away to kicking off another exciting season of Thunder Football Action!
Before everyone heads off for their much earned summer vacation, just a couple of reminders:
Training Camp begins Friday, July 24 with registration and individual players, coaches and staff pictures. (These are for the program) Players are to have their health forms and drug course certificate with them when they register. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.. All players must be registered, photographed, dressed and ready to be on the field at 7:00 p.m. sharp!
Our first home game is Saturday, August 15 @ 7:00 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium. We will need several volunteers to help out throughout the season, selling 50/50's, programs, clothing, selling and taking tickets at the door etc. I will have sign up sheets at the July 25 & 26 practices or you can email me with your preference of games and jobs you would like to do. This is a great way to meet other parents/fans!
Saturday, September 12 is our away game against the Saskatoon Hilltops! This has proven to be one of the favourite road trips for fans. We are looking into booking a fan bus if enough people are interested. The bus would leave the clubhouse at 2:00 p.m. and then travel to Saskatoon where we would be treated to a tour of the Great Western Brewery and then be fed brats and beer! Then off to the game for 7:00 p.m. and return home following the game. The following are approximate costs for a 56 passenger bus:
40 people would be $30.00 each plus game ticket cost
30 people would be $35.00 each plus game ticket cost
25 people would be $42.00 each plus game ticket cost
If you are interested in joining us on this fun filled event, please email me or sign up at the volunteer table at training camp July 25 and 26.
New Thunder Clothing will be show cased at Training Camp on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26!
Come early for best selection!
If anyone is interested in putting their business card or in sponsoring the Thunder in our program please contact Larry Livingstone pilsner12@sasktel.net by July 8, 2009.
Have a great and relaxing July!

Thunder Fans,
On behalf of the Regina Thunder Football Club, we are pleased to invite you to the 10th Annual Sports Dinner. This year's dinner will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Turvey Centre, beginning with a cocktail reception at 6:00 p.m. Jim Hopson, CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, will be the master of ceremonies for the evening.
The Sports Dinner honours contributors to minor football in Saskatchewan, and includes the presentation of:
·The Regina Minor Football Unsung Hero Award, recognizing contributions to minor football in Regina
· The Murray Sawa Award, recognizing lifetime contribution to amateur sports
· The Cronin Award, roasting a member of the Saskatchewan football community, presented by Bill Cronin.
This year's Cronin Award recipient is Tom Shepherd, former President of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Mr. Shepherd will be roasted by Al Ford, Larry Mueller and John Lynch, and it will certainly be entertaining.
The evening will also feature both a silent and live auction, with many exciting items (including sports memorabilia) for attendees to bid on.
Tickets for the Sports Dinner are $75 apiece, or $500 for a table of eight. All proceeds from the evening will be used to fund the operations of the Regina Thunder, which provides the opportunity for young men between the ages of 18 and 22 to play high-level football. Brennan Kasbrick - RB - Regina Thunder
In the Regina Thunder's 30-20 victory over the Winnipeg Rifles they have placed themselves in a position to solidify a playoff spot in the 2008 post season. Wow what an exciting game in Winnipeg! The guys played hard and put the coaches' game plan into action!
With only 2 games remaining in the regular season and both at home, it should make for an exciting run into the playoffs.
We host the first place, Saskatoon Hilltops this Sunday, September 28 @ 1:00 p.m. Saskatoon brings bus loads of fans so we need to bring family, friends and neighbours out to support the Thunder, as they take on the League Leaders.
Just a reminder that we are once again kicking off Game Day with a brunch at Best Western 7 Oaks Hotel at 9:20 a.m. Everyone is invited to come and eat, meet other Thunder Fans and hear more about the Thunder Organization (9:45).
After brunch join us for a beer at the Great Western Beer Gardens set up at Mosaic Stadium at field level. The Thunder Alumni will be selling beer one hour before game time, up until the end of the 3rd quarter.
Once again Thank You to all those families that have volunteered to work selling Inside Green at Rider Games and working at our home games. It makes our job on the board a lot easier and helps things run smoothly. I am still looking for 2 volunteers to sell 50/50 tickets at our last home game on October 5. If you have not yet volunteered and would be willing to help, please contact me by email shawnmccall@sasktel.net or see me at the brunch.
On October 1st the Thunder Board of Directors will be hosting a barbecue for the players, coaches and staff following practice. The intent of this event is to everyone in the organization have a chance to meet and gain an understanding of the roles that individuals play in making things happen on and off the field.

Thunder Families,
Once again the Regina Thunder Junior Football Team has been asked to sell Game Day Programs (INSIDE GREEN) at Rider Home Games! This is a great opportunity for us to build our reputation in the community and highlight our team members. The programs not only promote the Riders but also local football programs in our community. Watch for a Thunder player profiled in each new game day program!
In order for this activity to run effectively we need your help. Each Rider home game requires 20 program sellers. Therefore each player is requested to sign up for 4 spots on the sign up sheet in the clubhouse. When a player works 4 Rider games or has a family representative there and each sells a minimum of 10 programs, the player will be eligible for a $50.00 credit towards the 2009 season team fees. (If a player and 3 family members can all come to one game and each sells the minimum of 10 programs, that player has fulfilled the requirement for the $50.00 credit!)
INSIDE GREEN sellers are asked to arrive at Mosaic Stadium, inside GATE A, no later than 2 hours before game time. (If the game begins at 7:00 p.m. sellers must be there by 5:00 p.m.) This allows workers to sign in, receive their wristbands, get their floats, collect their programs and go to the designated spot outside the stadium. (Some sellers will be required to sell programs inside the main gates as well.) In addition to helping out the team, each worker will receive a wristband that will allow them to get into the game for free!!!! With sellouts in 3 games already predicted, you will want to sign up soon to ensure you see the Riders repeat as GREY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!
The contact person for this activity is RICK JUNIOR. If you have not signed up at the clubhouse and are interested in working this FRIDAY, JUNE 13 please contact Rick by Thursday. dbl_doodle228@hotmail.com 924-2012
Throughout the season if you need more information or would like to sign up please contact RICK JUNIOR. As well, if you have signed up for a game and are not able to make it contact Rick ASAP so he can find a replacement. If you are able to fill in on short notice, please send an email to Rick so he can put you on his emergency contact list.

Thunder Proud
Two
more Thunder Alumni get a shot at the CFL. The Regina Thunder
Junior Football Team is very proud to have been a part of
the steps involved in the development of Chris Getzlaf and
Steve Wilson as they get opportunities to try out with CFL
teams. Since their seasons with the Thunder, Chris and Steve
have been playing for the University of Regina Rams . Chris
was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger Cats and Steve signed as
a free agent with the Calgary Stampeders. We wish them great
success as they go forward with their football careers. |

Spring
Camp 2007
The
Thunder organization was very excited about the interest in
our spring camp. Over 110 players attended and participated
in the three day event! The competition was intense at all
positions which made for many difficult decisions for the
coaching staff. The weekend ended with a scrimmage and family
barbecue. A special thank you to Frank's Meats who donated
the hamburgers for the barbecue. |
