REGINA THUNDER REMAINS UNDEFEATED; CLINCHES FIRST PLACE

The Regina Thunder clinched first place in the PFC for the second successive season by defeating the host Calgary Colts 39-14.

The Regina Thunder clinched first place in the PFC for the second successive season by defeating the host Calgary Colts 39-14.

Regina improved its record to 7-0 after going 8-0 last season.

This year’s regular-season finale is Oct. 16 against the Edmonton Huskies (1 p.m., Leibel Field).

The Thunder will enter that contest with a 19-game regular-season winning streak, dating back to September of 2019.

On Sunday, Regina’s Carter Shewchuk threw three touchdown passes — two to Isaac Foord and one to Rylan Sokul.

Sokul caught seven passes for 120 yards. Foord added four catches for 67 yards and six punt returns for 78 yards.

Ryland Leichert led the Thunder’s ground game with 99 yards on 16 carries. Ife Adebogun added 57 yards on three rushes.

Defensively, the Thunder was led by Avery Wagner (who had an interception), Branden Janotta (six solo tackles, three assists), Stephen Smith (seven solo tackles, one assist), Kenton Effa (two solo tackles, eight assists, one pass knockdown) and Matthew Schill (four solo tackles, four assists).
