The Regina Thunder’s defence posted a second straight shutout, backstopping a 30-0 victory against the visiting Winnipeg Rifles on Sunday while winning its third straight game of the Prairie Football Conference season.
“As a defence we pride ourselves on holding them to as few points as possible,” said veteran Thunder linebacker Kenten Effa, who had a tackle for a loss and a pass knockdown. “It’s a team effort. It starts up front with the D-line, getting in their fits, allowing the linebackers and DBs to come up and make plays.”
After Winnipeg conceded a safety midway through the first quarter, running back Sadik Sadik and kicker Shawn Green accounted for all of Regina’s scoring. Sadik had rushing touchdowns of one, 13 and 10 yards. Green converted each touchdown, missed a 38-yard field goal for a single and added successful three-pointers of 40 and 17 yards.
Regina opened its season with a 61-14 victory over Winnipeg and was coming off a 36-0 shutout against the Edmonton Wildcats. All six PFC teams have a bye this upcoming week before the Saskatoon Hilltops, the reigning Canadian junior champions who also sport a 3-0 record, visit the Thunder on Sept. 7. Game time is 7 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium.
